Codex Model Retirements and Replacements

Codex with ChatGPT sign-in — the API and API-key Codex are not affected

GPT-5.4 MiniRetired 2026-08-31 — GPT-6 Luna where available (Enterprise and Edu admins must enable Luna first).
GPT-5.3 CodexDeprecated (no date given) — A recommended model; update scripts and config that still name it.
gpt-5.2Deprecated (no date given) — A recommended model; update scripts and config that still name it.

Removed from the API itself

GPT-5.4 CyberDeprecated on 2026-09-11 and removed from the API on 2026-10-01. OpenAI's stated replacement is "the most capable cyber model available to you".

Models leave Codex on a different schedule from the API, and that's the first thing to understand about this page. The retirements in the first table apply to Codex signed in with ChatGPT. The OpenAI API, and Codex authenticated with your own API key, aren't affected by them — so the same model id can stop working for one teammate and keep working for another on the same day, depending only on how each signed in.

What's leaving, and what replaces it

GPT-5.5 is next: it retires from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on October 14, 2026, on every plan. GPT-6 Sol is OpenAI's named replacement on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and GPT-6 Luna, in the desktop app, on Free and Go. Before that, GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 Mini left on August 31, 2026 and GPT-5.3 Codex Spark on September 14, 2026. GPT-5.3 Codex and GPT-5.2 are described as already deprecated for ChatGPT sign-in, with no shutdown date given — so this site shows none rather than guessing.

Where OpenAI's surfaces disagree

For GPT-5.4, the Codex models page names GPT-6 Sol as the replacement, while the Business rate card names GPT-5.6 Terra. This site reports both rather than choosing one. In practice, use whichever is available to your plan and client, and test it on your own work.

Every place an old model name hides

OpenAI's own list for each retirement is the same: workspace defaults, saved model settings, managed configurations, custom agents, scheduled tasks, and scripts or commands that select a model. In Enterprise and Edu, enable the replacement before changing defaults — a default doesn't grant access. Moving Codex off GPT-5.5 turns that into a checklist.

Removed from the API itself

The second table is different: models removed from the API entirely, which no sign-in method can reach. GPT-5.4 Cyber is there — deprecated, then removed, without ever having had a published price. OpenAI's stated replacement is the most capable cyber model available to you.

Could not confirm: Shutdown dates for gpt-5.3-codex and gpt-5.2 inside Codex: OpenAI calls both "already deprecated" for ChatGPT sign-in without a date. OpenAI's own surfaces also name different GPT-5.4 replacements — the Codex models page says GPT-6 Sol, the Business rate card says GPT-5.6 Terra — so both are reported rather than one chosen.
